New York Attorney Applauds Passage of Federal Resolution to Raise Awareness of Mesothelioma

Day is a major achievement that will bring about greater awareness of the asbestos-related disease by paying tribute to those who have died from the illness and promoting the search for treatments and a cure, says New York lawyer Joseph W. Belluck.
The passage of House of Representatives resolution 771 means that National Mesothelioma Awareness Day will be observed in the U.S. each year on September 26, beginning in 2011.
“We have always supported Mesothelioma Awareness Day,” says Belluck, a personal injury lawyer who concentrates in asbestos and mesothelioma cases. “This resolution establishes a day of recognition throughout the country and honors the many thousands of lives lost to this disease. Cities and states will now formally acknowledge the tragic history of asbestos.”
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, chest or abdomen associated with exposure to asbestos. Over the years, workers in industrial, construction and maritime industries have inhaled loose asbestos fibers or asbestos dust, leading to mesothelioma and asbestos-related cancers or illnesses up to 50 years after exposure. About 2,700 people in the U.S. die each year from mesothelioma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
“We must do everything possible to create awareness and ensure that our workplaces are safe,” says Belluck, a founding partner of Belluck & Fox. “It is also our sincere hope that Mesothelioma Awareness Day generates greater interest in the development of more effective treatments for patients who are diagnosed with this terrible disease."
